Accessibility
How Midterms26 is built to be usable by everyone: keyboard access, screen readers, contrast, dark mode, text alternatives for maps.
Built for everyone
Election results are public information, and everyone should be able to read them. We build Midterms26 with accessibility in mind from the start and keep improving it.
What the site offers
- A "Skip to content" link at the top of every page, and full keyboard access to links, menus, filters and tabs.
- Light and dark themes (the button in the top bar), following your device setting by default.
- Text you can enlarge with your browser's zoom without losing content; layouts that adapt to phones.
- Party and race information never shown by colour alone: every colour comes with a written label.
- Maps with text labels for each area, and the same information in tables and lists beside them.
- Filters and menus with labels for screen readers; an "Enlarge" button on maps and charts.
- Descriptive page titles, headings in order, and breadcrumbs on every page.
Tips
- To make text larger, press Ctrl and + (Cmd and + on a Mac).
- Use Tab and Shift+Tab to move between links and controls; Enter opens menus; Escape closes them.
- Every map has a table or list below it with the same information.
